How Does Concrete Cancer Occur?
Concrete cancer occurs when the steel reinforcement inside concrete begins corroding and expanding.
Concrete structures commonly contain embedded steel reinforcement bars that provide structural strength and support. Over time, moisture, oxygen, and contaminants can penetrate the concrete and reach the internal steel.
Once the steel reinforcement is exposed to these conditions, corrosion can begin developing beneath the concrete surface.
As the steel rusts, it expands significantly larger than its original size. This expansion creates internal pressure within the surrounding concrete.
Over time, that pressure causes the concrete to:
– Crack
– Lift
– Flake
– Chip
– Bubble
– Break apart
– Separate from the structure
This deterioration process is commonly referred to as concrete cancer.
Concrete cancer often begins internally before visible surface damage appears.
Several conditions can contribute to concrete cancer occurring, including:
– Water penetration
– Failed waterproofing
– Salt exposure
– Coastal environments
– Ageing concrete
– Cracked concrete surfaces
– Poor drainage
– Long-term moisture exposure
– General weathering
As moisture continues entering the concrete, the corrosion process may continue spreading through surrounding areas of the structure.
Concrete cancer commonly occurs in:
– Balconies
– Apartment buildings
– Car parks
– Rooftops
– Suspended slabs
– Basements
– Staircases
– Structural concrete areas
In many cases, the deterioration becomes progressively worse over time if the underlying moisture and corrosion issues are not addressed.
